Gemstones are precious or semi-precious stones used for their aesthetic properties. Gemstones are also commonly referred to as gems, fine gems, jewels, precious stones, or semi-precious stones. Agate, jade and onyx are examples of gemstones and are processed using either a 10.6 or 9.3 micron CO₂ laser, with some gemstones also absorbing the 1.06 micron fiber laser wavelength. Laser marking of gemstones is achieved by creating a pattern of microfractures on the surface, resulting in a light colored mark.
