Laser Tapes
Laser Tapes Overview
Laser tapes (glass laser tape or laser mask) are polymer based tapes specifically designed for laser cutting stencils for use in the abrasive etching of glass and various other materials. Manufacturers of this material include IKONICS® and Rayzist®. Laser processing of laser tape is possible with a 9.3 or 10.6 micron CO2 laser without any noticeable difference in processing quality. Laser tape does not readily absorb the energy produced by the 1.06 micron fiber laser and is not recommended for processing with this wavelength. Laser cutting produces a clean cut with no discoloration and sealed edges without damaging the substrate. Laser engraving of laser tape is also possible by completely ablating through the polymer layer to the underlying substrate. This process leaves the substrate clean and ready for any post-processing that is necessary. Laser marking of laser tape is not recommended with the 9.3, 10.6, or 1.06 micron lasers as the material does not significantly yield high contrast with this process.
